An end-of-life care plan is a personal roadmap that helps you tread the final stages of life the way you want. It clearly defines the practical, social, spiritual, and psychological support needed by you and your family as you get ready to embrace the last few months, and days of your life. Whether you are being cared for at home by loved ones or by a professional, or you are receiving end-of-life care in a care home, a well-considered care plan will outline pain management preferences, where you would like to pass, who you would like to be there and any special preferences and wishes that you would like to be honoured when the time comes. You will also be able to detail practical arrangements such as legal and financial matters and funeral planning. It also ensures that your family and caretakers are informed and involved, making the process less stressful for everyone.

At Verilife, we ensure that all our carers create comprehensive care plans for anyone receiving end-of-life-care, and they will involve the patient and the loved ones in this process as much as possible.

Our compassionate caretakers will initiate meaningful conversations as early on as possible to help family and healthcare providers understand your priorities and wishes clearly. The emphasis is on making everyone involved in matters that are of much significance to you—whether it is staying comfortable at home, spending time with loved ones, or ensuring that spiritual needs are met.

Why Is Planning For End-Of-Life Care Important?

Planning for end-of-life care is a much-needed initiative to comfort you during the last few days, weeks, and months of your life. Let us understand in detail:

Peace Of Mind For All

It involves planning for your and your family’s peace of mind. Your dear ones become aware that they are free from any stress related to your care logistics. Therefore, emotional bonding becomes their priority. The fact that the entire end care plan has been customised as per your own wish gives a sigh of relief during the final days.

Honouring The Patient’s Wishes

The final days care plan takes complete care of your physical, emotional, psychological, and social needs. It documents all that is needed to provide you with person-centred care. It even documents the surroundings where you wish to spend the final days of your life and your preferred line of treatment.

Supports Physical, Emotional, And Spiritual Well-Being

The plan caters to the psychological, social, and spiritual needs of both you and your family. It helps lower or remove the level of the anxiety, depression, or feelings of isolation as the end days come nearer.

Steps To Create An End-Of-Life Care Plan

Step 1: Assess needs and preferences

When planning for end-of-life care, you need to identify and answer the following:

– Where do you want to receive care (home, nursing home, or hospice)?

– What kind of support do you want (pain relief, emotional, or symptom control)?

– Who do you want around you (supporting people, family, friends)?

Step 2. Consult healthcare professionals

A word with healthcare professionals and social care professionals will:

– Help you better understand the medical treatments, palliative care, and other related care options.

– Help you decide where you would like to receive end-of-life care i.e. in a care home or at home with the help of a care professional such as the team at Verilife.

Step 3. Address legal and medical decisions

Make sure your wishes are clear, like:

– Outline your healthcare preferences.

– Choose a healthcare proxy or power of attorney to make decisions if needed.

– Include a Do Not Resuscitate (DNR) order or other care and treatment choices.

Step 4. Involve your family

Family involvement is an essential part of end-of-life care planning:

– Share your care plan for the end of life with your family.

– Discuss how they can support you and what roles they may need to take on.

Step 5. Review and update the plan

Your needs may change, so keep your end-of-life care plan flexible:

– Review it regularly and update it if your health or preferences change.

– Make sure your family and healthcare professionals are informed of any updates.

Special Considerations For Dementia Patients

Dementia affects more than just memory—it changes how a person perceives their surroundings, their emotions, and their ability to make decisions. That’s why creating an exceptional care plan for a loved one with dementia is so important. It is crucial not just to manage their illness and evolving needs but aim at giving them the best possible quality of life too.

Unlike other care plans, a care plan for dementia needs to be flexible and adaptive to consider the cognitive decline that happens over time.

Dementia patients often prefer their home as their setting during their good death days. They feel more secure and comfortable in these homely surroundings. Accordingly, we recommend modifying their home settings like improving lighting, installing safety features like grab rails, or even using visual aids like labels.

A dementia patient might feel isolated and confused owing to their loss of control in many ways. Our compassionate caretakers thus make themselves available to understand their emotional needs. We make sure they always feel secure and connected with their surroundings.

If you are unsure where to start, let us help. Contact us at hello@verilife.co.uk or call 020 8015 2887, and together, we will create a care plan that honours your loved one’s life and ensures they feel supported every step of the way. You can also have a look at our home care reviews for added reassurance.

Providing Support To Families And Loved Ones

Our comprehensive final days care planning includes thoughtful support for you and your family. We are here to give much-needed peace, comfort, and emotional strength to all.

Emotional support

We counsel the family members to handle their grief, confusion, and helplessness. If needed, we connect loved ones with counselling experts or support groups.

Educational resources

At Verilife, we educate your family about the medical procedures and outline what to expect in the final days. This knowledge helps them to make informed decisions and cope with what is happening.

How To Choose The Best Home Care Agency In The UK

1. Understand The Care Needs Of Your Loved One

The first step in selecting a home care agency is to evaluate the specific needs of your loved one. You must consider the level of assistance they need daily, such as:

Personal care: Assistance with hygiene, dressing, and feeding.

Medical management: Help with medication, monitoring, or post-operative care.

Specialised care: For dementia, mobility issues, or palliative care.

Matching the home care agency’s services with your loved one’s needs is essential to ensure they receive adequate care and support.

2. Types Of Home Care Services Available

Now that you have evaluated the care your loved one needs, here is how you can choose the types of home care services:

Personal care: Check if the agency assists with bathing, dressing, and grooming.

Nursing care: Ensure the agency has professional medical care and qualified nurses.

Companionship: Check if the agency has carers for individuals who need company and light assistance around the house.

Respite care: If there are caregivers who are for temporary relief, whether for a few hours or longer.

Understanding these distinctions helps you choose the most appropriate agency and service plan.

3. Look For A Regulated And Accredited Home Care Agency

The 3rd most critical factor when selecting a care agency is ensuring it is appropriately regulated. All home care agencies in the UK must be registered with the Care Quality Commission (CQC). The CQC regulates health and social care services and publishes inspection reports that evaluate whether agencies meet quality and safety standards.

Always check an agency’s CQC rating and read the inspection reports to ensure the care meets your standards. So, choosing a regulated care agency ensures your loved one will receive a high standard of care.

4. The Agency Must Have Well-Trained Carers

The quality of care depends significantly on the experience and training of the caregivers. A well-qualified live-in carer or visiting care worker should hold relevant certifications and undergo regular training to keep up with the best practices in personal care and medical management.

When choosing an agency, ensure that their carers have:

Proper qualifications and certifications.

Regular training updates, especially for specialised care (e.g., dementia care).

A compassionate approach to caregiving, ensuring your loved one is treated with respect and empathy.

5. Evaluate A Home Care Agency’s Reputation

A reputable home care agency should have positive feedback from families and individuals using their services. To evaluate a care agency’s reputation, consider:

Online reviews: Check reviews on the websites like Trustpilot or Google Reviews.

Recommendations: You can also ask friends, family, or healthcare professionals for recommendations.

Past clients: Where possible, speak to current or past clients about their experiences.

6. Costs And Funding Options For Home Care

Understanding the cost of home care services is essential for planning. Home care prices can vary depending on the type of care required, the frequency of visits, and whether your loved one requires live-in care or hourly visits.

Key points to consider:

Hourly rates: Many home care agencies charge per hour for visits.

Live-in care: This typically costs more but provides 24/7 support.

Funding options: In some cases, local authorities may offer financial assistance. You can explore eligibility for benefits like attendance allowance or seek advice from the agency on payment plans.

7. Match The Right Carer With Your Loved One

Lastly, finding a carer who fits your loved one’s personality and preferences is essential to ensuring their comfort and happiness. A suitable care agency will:

Offer a personalised care plan, considering your loved one’s routine and lifestyle.

Arrange for interviews or trial periods, allowing you and your loved one to meet the carer before committing.

Ensure the carer’s style and approach align with your family member’s needs and preferences.

When it comes to serious illness, the complexities of healthcare can be overwhelming for families and their loved ones. The terms “end-of-life care” and “palliative care” are often used interchangeably, when in fact, they represent distinct approaches to compassionate support. Understanding these differences will go a long way in ensuring that individuals receive the right care at the right time. At Verilife, we are committed to providing expert carers who are passionate about delivering personalised and empathetic care. While end-of-life care is a specific form of palliative care that focuses solely on the final stages of life, palliative care itself is a broader approach designed to enhance the quality of life for those with a serious illness at any stage.

Read on for a detailed look into these two types of care, the differences between them, and how the professionals at Verilife can help.

What Is Palliative Care?

A terminal illness can be extremely challenging both mentally and physically for both the patient and their loved ones. It involves coping with intense emotional stress, anxiety, and grief while managing physical pain, fatigue, and other debilitating symptoms. Receiving palliative care can help you manage the pain, as well as reduce the associated distressing symptoms.

The aim of palliative care is not just about making you comfortable, it is about empowering individuals to live the fullest of lives for as long as possible. This approach focuses on enhancing the quality of their life by addressing all the components involved from emotional, social, and spiritual needs to the medical ones, enabling patients to pursue their passions and maintain meaningful relationships with their family, friends, and colleagues. In short, palliative care treats the whole person and not just their illness or its symptoms.

While palliative care includes end-of-life care, the key differentiator is that it can be given at any point along the treatment process. The time spent in palliative care differs from person to person depending on the illness and the type of support they require. For instance, some of the individuals in our care living with terminal cancer have sought palliative care from the moment of diagnosis and continued with it throughout their chemotherapy treatment and beyond – sometimes over a matter of years. Whilst other patients under our care have only requested palliative care during tougher moments in their journey or solely in the months or weeks leading up to their transition into receiving end-of-life care.

Palliative care can take many forms depending on the requirements of the individual concerned. At Verilife care agency, we personalise care plans for everyone we look after. When it comes to the type of care delivered, there is no one sized-fits-all approach to be taken. However, it is possible for us to provide some examples to demonstrate how palliative care can be tailored to meet the unique needs of individuals with different diagnoses.

For instance, let us imagine a middle-aged cancer patient living with advance stage lung cancer who lives at home with family and wants to receive palliative care to aid symptom management. Let’s assume, the aim of their palliative care provision is to maintain quality of life and stay at home, surrounded by loved ones and that their symptoms are managed effectively, allowing them to enjoy family activities and personal hobbies as much as possible.

In this scenario, our specialist home carers may decide to take a multidisciplinary approach to their care. This may include a nurse who visits regularly to manage their pain and administer medications. The team will monitor symptoms such as breathlessness and fatigue, adjusting treatment plans, as necessary. They may also provide nutritional advice and collaborate with their oncologist to ensure a consistent treatment plan. Additionally, a social worker may visit regularly to offer counselling for both the individual being cared for and their family to help them cope with the emotional challenges of their diagnosis and to aid the emotional support provided by our carer.

Our care team may educate the family on how to assist with daily tasks and provide guidance and resources for additional support.

Let us now imagine an elderly patient suffering from congestive heart failure and needing comprehensive support. They live alone, but family members are nearby. Let’s assume that the aim of their palliative care provision is to ensure they experience fewer hospital visits and can live independently with a support system in place. The patient wants to maintain a decent quality of life, enjoying hobbies as they have always done and socialising with friends and family.

In this case, our carers may decide that the patient receives palliative care focused on complete support for his heart condition. A specialised nurse may be arranged to visit multiple times a week to monitor things like blood pressure, weight, and symptoms like swelling and shortness of breath. The nurse would collaborate with the patient’s cardiologist to adjust medications and manage his symptoms proactively.

Additional support may come in the form of a physical therapist who visits to help with exercises that improve mobility and breathing capacity. A dietician may be enlisted to assist with meal planning to help the patient stick to a low-sodium diet and maintain his weight for example.

Our assigned care giver can also assist with household tasks, cleaning, medication reminders, and arranging transport to hospital appointments and whatever else may be needed day to day.

Palliative care often requires a comprehensive approach involving teams of various healthcare professionals such as GPs, nurses, and physiotherapists. It can be delivered in care homes, hospitals, hospices, or in the patient’s home, which is our specialism at Verilife.

Many individuals prefer to stay in the comfort of their home for as long as possible when receiving palliative care so they are in familiar, comfortable surroundings and can still reap the benefits of family, friends and other loved ones popping in to visit and support them. Our palliative carers are experts at coordinating the care our patients receive and create bespoke care plans to ensure their unique health and wellbeing needs are met with the highest standards of care.

End-of-life care is the final stage of palliative care. If a patient is receiving end-of-life care, it means that they are being cared and supported for in the last months, weeks, or days of their life. The aim at this stage is to help the patient be as comfortable as possible and to die with dignity. The care focuses on managing pain for physical symptoms and providing the emotional guidance and support needed for both the patient, their family, and other loved ones.

If they have not been had already, meaningful conversations are encouraged so that the patient can express all their dying wishes and needs, right down to the last detail. Our carers excel at helping patients and their loved ones express their desires and needs with each other like who would they like present, where would they like to die, funeral decisions, etc. Our carers record all decisions and discussions in a patient’s personalised care plan to ensure everyone involved is aware of a patient’s wishes, and it is reviewed constantly.

We support loved ones through the entire process too and our carers are always happy to answer questions about the care plan and the treatment the patient is receiving. We are as inclusive as we can be.

This final stage of care is so important. As carers, we only get one chance to make sure a patient’s journey ends the way they want it to, and with dignity, compassion, and heart.

As with birth, everyone’s experience with death is unique. While some may have a gradual journey, others may decline quickly. Caring for someone nearing the end of life is an incredibly profound and personal experience, marked by unique challenges and deep emotional bonds. Whilst it is a privilege, it can also take a significant toll both physically and emotionally on both the person dying and the caregiver, particularly if they are providing 24/7 care for a loved one in their home. Without the right support, the pressure of having only one chance to ensure a loved one’s final journey is comfortable, dignified, and aligned with their wishes can make end-of-life care overwhelming.

If you are caring for a loved one, understanding the stages of this journey can bring comfort and clarity when you seek it the most. This blog aims to guide you through these stages, offering insights and practical advice to help navigate this sacred time with compassion, dignity, and the necessary support to ensure the last moments are as peaceful and meaningful as possible.

The Difference Between End-of-Life Care And Palliative Care

There is often some confusion between end-of-life care and palliative care, as the terms are frequently used interchangeably. While they are connected, they are, in fact, distinct. Before we move onto the stages of end-of-life, it is important to just clarify the differences between these two types of care:

Palliative care can begin as soon as someone is diagnosed with a life-limiting illness, such as terminal cancer, or at any stage thereafter when symptoms start to advance. Often, palliative care is provided alongside other treatments like chemotherapy. Its primary aim is to manage pain and other symptoms to allow the individual to live comfortably and fully for as long as possible, even if a cure is not achievable.

In comparison, end-of-life care is the final stage of palliative care, administered during the last few weeks, days, and hours of a person’s life. The goal of end-of-life care is not to prolong life but to ensure that the individual’s dying wishes are honored and that their transition is dignified and pain-free, providing complete peace in their last moments.

There are common warning signs indicating that someone is transitioning from being in palliative care to nearing the end of their life. These signs include:

Breathing Changes

As a person progresses into the last stage of their life, it is common for breathing patterns to change due to inactivity. Spending more time resting rather than being active can lead to decreased oxygen demand, weakening muscles, fluid accumulation in the lungs, and neurological changes, which can diminish the brain’s ability to regulate breathing. Some medications like opioids can also suppress the respiratory system, causing slower and irregular breathing.

These changes can manifest in unusual ways, whether it be cycles of rapid breathing followed by no breathing, gasping, laboured breathing, shallow breaths, or a gurgling noise resulting from fluid build-up in the throat and airways (commonly referred to as the “death rattle”).

It’s important to note that whilst some of these changes may sound distressing, it does not necessarily mean they are in discomfort or struggling for breath.

Common strategies that a professional caregiver may take to manage these breathing changes are to reposition the person onto their side to clear the airways, use medications to reduce secretions, using a humidifier to keep airways moist, and maintain a calm environment to help the person in need stay relaxed.

Sleeping More Often

Your loved one may start to sleep more than usual or seem drowsy even when they are awake. They may even lose consciousness for a while. This is normal, and it is important to just go with it and let them sleep whenever they want. Calm surroundings, soothing music and a dimly lit room will aid peaceful sleep. You can hold their hand and talk to them softly for reassurance and comfort – they may still be able to hear you during these moments.

Confusion

Increased medications and chemical changes in the brain can alter someone’s normal personality, mood, and habits. They may appear more restless or agitated and may even become increasingly confused to the point where they may hallucinate or not recognise you or other close friends and family members. Plus, as they begin to sleep for longer periods, the lines between dreams and reality can become easily blurred. Whilst medications can help ease their agitation, you could also ensure they have peaceful surroundings to keep them calm, remain close for reassurance, and if they get something wrong, there is no need to correct them as recognising they have made a mistake can cause distress.

Loss Of Appetite And Thirst

It is completely normal to experience a decline in appetite and thirst near the end of life. The body’s metabolism slows down, reducing the need for nutrients and fluids, while vital organs, including the digestive system, begin to function less efficiently. The body’s energy focuses less on digestion and more on maintaining essential functions. Medications for pain and symptom management can also suppress appetite and thirst, and neurological changes can alter the sense of hunger and thirst. If your loved one is finding it hard to swallow, this may affect their desire to eat too.

Although it may seem strange not to encourage a loved one to eat, there is no need to force them to at this stage. In fact, attempting to do so may cause more harm than good. These changes are a natural part of the dying process so try not to become fixated on the fact they are not eating or drinking very much and turn your focus to providing comfort instead.

Focus on offering small portions of their favourite foods or drinks if they show interest in eating but respect their decision if they decline. Keep their mouth moist with ice cubes, a damp sponge, offering small sips of water, or applying lip balm can help also. Offering reassurance and being attentive to their needs will also help them remain dignified whilst trying to consume food and drink – if this is a concern to them.

Change In Skin Colour/Temperature

It is common to notice changes in a person’s skin temperature and colour, such as paleness or mottling, as a result of decreased circulation. A reduction in blood oxygen levels can also contribute to a bluish or grayish tint which looks a bit like bruising.

As blood vessels start to narrow, skin will become cooler, whilst organ failure further impacts temperature regulation. You might notice that their hands, feet, nose, and ears feel colder to touch. Medications used can also affect the skin’s appearance. Again, these changes are natural and while they may look shocking, they usually do not cause discomfort. Being on hand with a warm blanket or two when needed will help keep your loved one comfortable.

Other common end-of-life signs include:

Loss of bladder and bowel control. Or a change in bathroom habits – they may go less often if they are eating and drinking less.

Metabolism can affect body odours.

Teeth or hand clenching, grimacing, crying out and moaning can all be due to increased pain levels. A professional caregiver will be able to medicate appropriately to ease their pain as much as possible.

As we mentioned at the beginning, everyone’s journey towards death is unique, so there is no one-sized-fits all timeline of what will happen and when, when it comes to the end of someone’s life. For this reason, it is impossible to say how long each end-of-life stage will last. However, the information below provides a generalised overview of common signs and changes observed as a person progresses through various stages towards the end-of-life:

You can also ask if they have a current will, funeral preferences, and other requests.

Do not forget about the details either. Now is the time to discuss the preferences of your loved ones with regards to all aspects of their end-of-life journey, from bucket lists, to who they want present and when.

Recognising these changes early ensures their safety and well-being.

Home carer services provide essential support and allow elderly individuals to maintain their independence while receiving the care they need at home. This blog outlines nine signs that indicate your ageing parent might benefit from a home carer service in London.

At Verilife, we are a reliable and experienced care agency with qualified carers.
Home care services cover a wide range of assistance tailored to meet the unique needs of older individuals. Personal care, such as hygiene and nutrition, ensures daily routines are maintained. On the other hand, incontinence care, medication management, and prescription collection are vital for health and well-being.

Home carers also prepare meals, assist with laundry and cleaning, collect pensions, offer complex care, and support mental health difficulties as part of comprehensive home care. If you think your parent needs operation recovery and rehabilitation, a trained home carer will offer that as well to ensure a smooth transition back to routine activities.

The goal is to enhance quality of life while respecting personal preferences and routines.

“Do you think your ageing parent needs help with daily tasks or support with any health condition? Let Verilife offer you a compassionate and trained home carer who will understand and offer tailored help.“

9 Signs Your Aging Parent May Need Home Carer Service

1. Decline In Personal Hygiene

If you notice your parent is neglecting their personal hygiene, it could be a sign they need help. This includes unwashed hair, body odour, and wearing the same clothes for days. These changes can result from physical limitations, such as arthritis, making it difficult to bathe or dress.

Additionally, cognitive decline can make them forget or overlook these tasks. A home carer can assist with daily grooming, bathing, and dressing, thus ensuring that they maintain their dignity and health.

2. Difficulty Managing Medication

Proper medication management is crucial for maintaining health. If your parent forgets to take their medication, takes the wrong dosage, or misses appointments for refills, it may be time for assistance.

Mismanagement can lead to serious health risks, including adverse drug interactions and ineffective treatment of chronic conditions. Home carers can ensure medications are taken correctly and on schedule. They can also coordinate with healthcare providers to manage prescriptions.

3. Weight Loss Or Poor Nutrition

Significant weight loss or signs of malnutrition, such as fatigue or weakened immunity, indicate a need for help. Your parent may struggle with meal preparation, grocery shopping, or even remembering to eat. They might also have difficulty chewing or swallowing.

A qualified home carer can assist by preparing nutritious meals to ensure a balanced diet. This support helps prevent health issues related to poor nutrition, such as weakened muscles and decreased immunity.

4. Unexplained Bruises Or Injuries

Your parent may have difficulty navigating their home or performing daily activities safely. This may result in serious injuries, like fractures or head trauma.

A home care worker can provide support with mobility. They can also identify and address potential hazards in the home, such as loose rugs or poor lighting, to prevent accidents.

5. Increased Forgetfulness

Occasional forgetfulness is normal with ageing, but significant memory lapses mean they need help. If your parent forgets important appointments, struggles with familiar tasks, or repeats themselves frequently, they may be experiencing cognitive decline. This can lead to safety concerns, such as forgetting to turn off the stove.

Having a trustworthy companion at home can help manage their routine, ensuring they stay safe and organised.

6. Reduced Social Interaction

Social withdrawal or a lack of interest in activities they once enjoyed can be a sign of depression, anxiety, or mobility issues. Isolation can further impact their mental and physical health, which then leads to feelings of loneliness and a decline in overall well-being.

Home carers can offer companionship, engage them in social activities, and accompany them to community events or appointments. This helps maintain their social connections and mental health.

7. Unkempt Home

A once-tidy home becoming cluttered or dirty may indicate that your parent is struggling with housekeeping tasks. Physical limitations or cognitive decline can make it difficult to keep up with cleaning, laundry, and other household chores.

Having a home carer helps in this situation. They can assist with these tasks, ensuring the living environment remains clean, safe, and comfortable. This also reduces the risk of accidents, such as tripping over clutter, and promotes a healthier living space.

8. Changes In Mood Or Behaviour

Sudden mood swings, increased irritability, confusion, or anxiety can make daily interactions and activities challenging. A professional home carer will provide emotional support and monitor their mood and behaviour for any concerning changes.

They can also engage them in activities that promote mental well-being and refer them to appropriate healthcare professionals if needed.

9. Financial Confusion

With time, your parent may face difficulty in managing finances, such as unpaid bills, missed payments, or confusion with money matters. This could stem from cognitive decline, making it hard to keep track of financial responsibilities.

A home carer from a trustworthy care agency can ensure bills are paid on time and help your parent organise their financial documents. This helps prevent financial mishaps and ensures their financial stability.

1. Providing Daily Living Assistance

Support workers assist clients with daily tasks such as meal preparation, personal hygiene, and medication management. This support helps them maintain their physical health and manage their condition effectively.

By ensuring that these basic needs are met, you can focus on your mental health recovery. The care worker’s presence can also reduce stress and improve the overall quality of life.

2. Offering Emotional Support And Companionship

Support workers provide crucial emotional support and companionship. They are often a vital source of comfort and understanding for clients, offering a listening ear and empathetic presence.

This support can help reduce feelings of isolation and loneliness, which are common in mental health struggles. Regular interaction with a supportive individual can boost the client’s mood and provide a sense of stability and security.

3. Facilitating Social Skills And Community Integration

Specialist mental health care workers help clients develop social skills and integrate into their communities. They might assist clients in attending social activities, joining support groups, or participating in community events.

This enhances your social network, reduces feelings of isolation, and promotes a sense of belonging.

4. Developing Coping Strategies

A caring support worker will also assist clients in developing effective coping strategies for managing their mental health conditions. They might introduce techniques such as mindfulness, stress management, and problem-solving skills.

By teaching these strategies, support workers empower you to handle difficult situations more effectively. This can lead to improved mental resilience and a greater sense of control over their lives.

5. Monitoring And Reporting Progress

Support workers play a critical role in monitoring the client’s progress and reporting any changes to healthcare professionals. They keep track of the client’s daily activities, mood, and overall health. This ensures that any issues are identified and addressed promptly.

“At Verilife, we are a team of passionate and empathetic care workers offering tailored home care services for mental health recovery and other in-home care needs.”

How Do You Find The Right Support Worker?

1. Check Qualifications And Experience

Ensure the support worker has relevant qualifications and experience in mental health care. Look for certifications, training, and professional background that align with your needs.

Experienced workers are better equipped to handle complex situations and provide effective support. They understand the nuances of mental health conditions and can offer tailored care plans that enhance the client’s recovery journey.

2. Assess Personal Compatibility

Personal compatibility is crucial for a successful support relationship. The support worker should be someone who can build trust and rapport with the client. Consider their communication style, personality, and ability to empathise.

A good match can significantly improve the client’s comfort and engagement, leading to better outcomes in mental health recovery.

3. Look For Flexibility And Adaptability

Choose someone or ask your care agency to offer someone who is flexible and adaptable to changing needs. Mental health conditions can fluctuate, necessitating adjustments in care plans. A flexible support worker can respond to these changes promptly and effectively.

They should be willing to modify their approach based on the client’s progress and any emerging challenges.

4. Seek Recommendations And Reviews

Ask for recommendations from healthcare professionals, friends, or family members who have used support services. Read online reviews and testimonials to get a sense of the support worker’s reputation and reliability.

Feedback from other clients can provide valuable insights into the worker’s effectiveness and professionalism. It helps you make a more informed decision.

5. Evaluate The Care Provider’s Reputation

Research the care provider’s reputation and track record. Look for an agency with a history of providing high-quality, reliable services. A well-regarded agency is likely to have stringent hiring practices and offer better support services. It will prioritise client well-being and ensure their workers meet high standards.

You might be wondering what the benefits of having hobbies are? While there are benefits to hobbies throughout your whole life, they come into their own during the older years, as after retirement they can help to keep you stimulated. So, let’s find out the benefits of having some hobbies, and what they could potentially be.

Providing stress relief

Having a hobby and an activity you enjoy can really take your mind off anything that may be causing you stress. It is a healthy way of providing a distraction from anything that is on your mind, and you can even have fun whilst doing it. Stress relief is so important, and having a hobby is a healthy way of coping.

Maintain a sense of accomplishment

Even though the pace of life may have slowed down in older age, that doesn’t mean that accomplishments have to stop. Hobbies and your advancement in them can help you retain the sense of accomplishment that improving in something can provide.

Improve your health and immune system

Hobbies, especially physical ones such as light exercise, can help you keep your immune system healthy. Light exercise or even just taking your hobbies outside can mean that your lungs are kept healthier, and your positive attitude could help you maintain your independence and health.

Maintain your confidence and self esteem

Embarking on existing hobbies is something that can help you retain your confidence, and learning a new hobby could even improve on your self esteem. Everyone loves exceeding in a new skill, and this satisfaction is something you can experience with the enjoyment of a brand-new hobby.

Maintain agility in your joints

Your hobbies don’t have to include physical exercise – even more stagnant hobbies can help you keep the agility in your joints. This could be because of painting, sewing, knitting or even making things. Keeping your mobility is an important part of ageing, and hobbies can help you in this endeavour.

Widen your social circle

Some hobbies can help you widen your social circle. Those that require more than one person – chess, bingo, and some physical activity, for example – can help you build and maintain friendships. Relationships are so important in helping you to keep a positive attitude and enjoyment in your every day.

What hobbies could you embark on?

It’s likely that you may already have hobbies and you just need a push to revisit them, or maybe you had a treasured hobby when you were younger, and you’re keen to try it out again. If you’re looking for a new hobby, but you don’t know where to start, you could think about the following:

Gentle ports

Chess

Games – sudoku, cards, board games, bingo

Walking

Gardening

Sewing or knitting

Reading

Hobbies are something that can be supported by your home care worker. Whether this is playing a board game with you, accompanying you on a walk or taking you to a group activity, your care worker will ensure that your independence is maintained. Here at Verilife, it is our priority to ensure that you can enjoy your everyday life, whilst being supported by our knowledgeable, empathetic care workers. Although the condition isn’t targeted only to people of an elderly age, it’s much more prevalent in the older age group. Due to the pain arthritis can cause, everyday tasks can become much harder for those affected, and this is when home care may be considered to increase the quality of life. Let’s find out a bit more about arthritis and how you can help alleviate the symptoms.

What is arthritis?

Arthritis is a condition that causes inflammation and pain in the joints. There are three types of arthritis: osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and juvenile arthritis. The difference between osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis is the cause for the symptoms – rheumatoid is an autoimmune disease, whereas osteoarthritis is due to wear and tear on the joints. The symptoms of arthritis can include:

Pain

Redness

Swelling

Stiffness

Tenderness

Warmth

In severe cases, these symptoms can limit the movement someone is capable of, which in turn affects their ability to carry out daily tasks.

What can you do for arthritis?

The symptoms of arthritis can sometimes be eased with the use of medication. There is also the option of surgery in severe cases. Joint surgery often leads to the relief of pain, but is a big undertaking and recovery. It can be a good idea to practice some gentle exercises that can alleviate the symptoms of arthritis over time, and keep your joints mobile and less stiff.

What are some exercises you can do for arthritis?

You might be wondering what some of the recommended exercises are for strengthening the joints while having arthritis. If you have neck pain, you could try the following:

Exercise 1 – Tilt your head from side to side, bringing your ear down to your shoulder and back up. It could be a good idea to sit down during this exercise so you don’t lose your balance. Repeat this exercise slowly five times.

Exercise 2 – Slowly turn your head to look from side to side. Keep your chin at the same height the whole time and gently engage your neck muscles. If this is uncomfortable, you could try it lying down when your head supported.

Exercise 3 – Maintaining good posture, tilt your head down to meet your chin to your chest. Engage your neck muscles, and bring it back up. Repeat this slowly.

You could try these exercises to strengthen your fingers and hands:

Exercise 1 – To strengthen your fingers, place your hand on a table on top of a piece of paper or tissue, with your fingers spread. Practice closing your fingers and opening them again, scrunching the tissue beneath.

Exercise 2 – Stretch the muscles and joints of your thumbs by holding your hand out in front of you, with your thumb splayed. Bring your thumb across your palm, and then move it back to the starting position and repeat five times.

Exercise 3 – Your wrists may also be affected by arthritis, and so to promote their mobility, make sure your elbow is at a 90° angle and face your palm up. Then rotate your palm so that it faces down, and then again to face up. Repeat a number of times.

Exercise like low-impact aerobic activity and strength training is also recommended for those with arthritis. Pain can be helped with heat, ice, and massage therapies, so this could be an avenue to look into.

The symptoms of your arthritis can be difficult to live with, especially if they start to affect your day-to-day range of motion, and your ability to carry out tasks. This is where the option of home care can come in. Your care worker can help you with the laundry, cooking, spend time with you getting you ready for the day, and even taking you to appointments. If you’re interested in excellent home care that prioritises your happiness and independence, get in touch with our team at Verilife. It involves providing assistance, support, and care to individuals who may have physical or mental health conditions, disabilities, or elderly individuals in need of daily assistance.

The temperament and patience required for being a care worker will vary depending on the specific context and the needs of the individuals being cared for. Some individuals may require intensive care, while others simply need an extra hand with day-to-day activities. Whatever the circumstances, it’s essential for care workers to be adaptable, understanding, and capable of providing person-centred care tailored to each individual’s needs.

Training requirements for care workers vary depending on which route you enter the sector, via the NHS, or working for private company for example. There is a well-regulated formal training programme in the UK with multiple certifications across many disciplines to equip care workers with the necessary support, skills and knowledge to carry out tasks safely and to the best of their abilities. The courses cover a wide range of topics such as personal care, hoisting, food hygiene, medication management, communication skills, health & safety procedures, and understanding specific conditions or disabilities.

Care workers often find great job satisfaction and a sense of purpose in their work. They have the opportunity to make a real positive impact on the lives of the individuals they care for, helping them maintain their independence, improving their quality of life, and providing emotional support. The sense of fulfilment that comes from knowing you’re making a difference in someone’s life can be incredibly rewarding.

Additionally, care workers often develop close friendships with the people they care for and their families. Building these connections and being able to provide comfort, companionship, and a sense of security can create a strong sense of purpose and fulfilment in the caregiving role.

It’s important to note that being a care worker can also be challenging, both physically and emotionally. It requires resilience, self-care, and a support system to manage the demands of the job effectively.

Pay scales often hit the news headlines and it’s safe to say everyone would like care workers to be better rewarded financially, but at present, pay rates are in line with national guidelines and often go higher as extra qualifications or responsibilities are added. For many individuals, being a care worker is a deeply meaningful and fulfilling career with many benefits that can’t be quantified on paper.

Verilife staff are highly skilled and motivated, we have an ongoing recruitment process to find the very best employees, who understand our company mission is to always treat our service users with dignity and care. Building supportive social networks and engaging in meaningful social interactions is crucial in combating loneliness and promoting a sense of belonging. In this blog, we share our ideas for helping older people make new friends and discover interesting social opportunities, along with a few useful nationwide and local support services.

Building supportive social networks

Participation in community activities

Encouragement to join local clubs, daycentres, or community groups that align with interests, such as book clubs, hobby groups, sports, or volunteering opportunities. These activities provide excellent avenues for meeting like-minded individuals and fostering new connections.

Embracing technology

Teaching older adults how to use social media platforms, video chat apps, or online forums to help connect with friends, family, and communities of interest. Virtual interactions can bridge geographical gaps and expand social networks.

Promote intergenerational connections

Encouraging older adults to engage with younger generations through mentorship programmes, volunteering at schools, or participating in intergenerational community events. These connections provide a wonderful sense of purpose and foster mutual learning.

Making new friends

Attend events and workshops

Encourage attendance at local events, workshops, or seminars focused on topics of interest. This provides an opportunity to meet new people who share similar passions and to engage in meaningful conversations. If fit and able, visits to museums, parks and beauty spots are great places to strike up a chat with other singles passing the time. Cafes, pubs and local diners often offer a warm welcome to new customers. Take a book or newspaper to read if the place is empty but do try and have a few words with nearby guests and, of course, pass pleasantries with the staff. Go back, regularly, to build up connections with other clientele; many of whom are often in the same boat.

Virtual interactions can bridge geographical gaps and expand social networks.

Join support groups

Investigate support groups or organisations specifically catering to older adults in the community. These groups often organise regular gatherings where individuals can share experiences, drink tea and form friendships.

Engage in lifelong learning

Encourage older adults to enrol in classes or workshops that promote lifelong skills, such as art classes, language courses, or culinary and practical skills, these environments offer opportunities for socialising while pursuing personal interests. There are no limits to education and it’s possible to start a degree online at any age with the Open University, sharing live and recorded lectures with students of all ages across geographical boundaries. The University of the Third Age (U3A) is a nationwide network of learning groups aimed at encouraging older people to share their knowledge, skills and interests in a friendly environment. There are no exams and no homework, just regular lessons or study groups.

Socialising opportunities

Day centres

These offer a range of social activities, including exercise classes, games, arts and crafts, and group outings. They serve as a hub for older adults to connect with peers and engage in stimulating activities. Contact your local council for a list of venues and, probably, their waiting list.

Local libraries

Libraries often host book clubs, lectures, and readings that attract individuals with shared interests. Explore your local resources and attend events to meet fellow book lovers and engage in (intellectual) discussions.

Contact Verilife

The form can be filled in the actual website url.

Community events

Stay informed about local events, such as sporting tournaments, craft fairs, or concerts. These events provide a chance for older adults to socialise while enjoying shared experiences. The music and drama departments of many senior schools regularly put on highly professional shows and concerts, these are much cheaper than regular theatre seats and a nice way to support local youngsters and budding thespians appreciative of an audience and its participation. Check out the tournaments at local cricket, tennis, bowls, football clubs; and whether they need any volunteer stewards.

Nationwide charities and Helplines

Age UK

Age UK offers a national advice line (0800 678 1602) providing information and support to older adults. They also run various services and activities, including befriending programmes, exercise classes, and local social groups.

The Silver Line

The Silver Line operates a helpline (0800 4 70 80 90) available 24/7, providing a friendly and supportive chat to combat loneliness among older adults. They can also connect individuals to local services and offer regular friendship calls.

Royal Voluntary Service

The Royal Voluntary Service runs one of the largest networks of volunteers, putting its helpers in touch with isolated residents who could do with seeing a friendly face or a helping hand now and then. They even run a virtual Village Hall where anyone can pop in and enjoy the online activities.

There are other national service providers too. For older people who are not online a visit to a local library is a good starting point. Kind librarians can often run computer searches for details, and many have printed leaflets to take away.

In our neck of the woods, there are several useful support services covering residents in Bromley and Croydon:

Croydon Neighbourhood Care Association (CNCA) offers various befriending, transportation assistance, and social clubs for older adults.

Bromley Well provides a range of services to support the well-being of adults in the Bromley area. Their services include befriending, social groups, and community navigation to help individuals access relevant support networks.

By actively promoting supportive social networks, facilitating new friendships, and identifying opportunities for socialisation, we can help to combat loneliness among older adults. Encouraging participation in community activities, embracing technology, and connecting with younger generations are all essential steps, but often easier said than done.

Nationwide charities and specialist local organisations provide valuable resources and support services to help older adults build fulfilling and compassionate social networks. Together, we can make a difference and promote a real sense of belonging for seniors. If you’d like to know more about Verilife and our unique approach to home care in Bromley and surrounding areas, please get in touch.
